CONTINUUM
‘Repetition and shifts. A rhythm that is repeated
even as it changes. Just like the days of our lives.’
The word ‘continuum’ comes from Latin and is derived from continēre, meaning ‘to hold together’. It can also mean something enduring, or a contiguous series of related events. In 2016 Solveig Aalberg began weaving miniatures in a format of ca. 20 x 24 cm. Soon the series was entitled Continuum. Altogether, Aalberg has woven more than 100 miniatures. By making many miniatures based on the same theme, Aalberg explores how apparently simple phenomena can contain both complexity and a wealth of details.
Repetition and change are reflected in the creation process. The making of each miniature relates to criteria that are partly determined in advance – for instance, the yarn density, the colour palette, the number of weft colours and repetitions – and partly during the creation process, with stitches, twisted yarn, and knottes being added, and by treating the woven starting points in various ways. Aalberg uses materials such as linen, cotton, silk, hemp, polyester, polypropylene, and reflective fibre. Some yarn is hand-coloured to achieve desired shades. The weaving techniques are double weaving with a single warp, and plain weave.

I 2016 begynte Solveig Aalberg å veve miniatyrer i et format på ca. 20 x 24 cm, og ganske snart fikk de fellestittelen Continuum. Aalberg har til sammen laget hundre utgaver. Gjennom mengden av miniatyrer som er bygget over samme lest undersøker Aalberg hvordan det tilsynelatende enkle faktisk kan romme både kompleksitet og detaljrikdom.
Gjentagelse og forskyvning speiles i framstillingsprossen. Utførelsen av hver miniatyr forholder seg til kriterier som delvis bestemmes på forhånd, som trådtetthet, fargeholdning, antall innslagsfarger og repetisjoner i vevprosessen, og delvis underveis; der sting, tvunnede tråder og knuter tilføres og bearbeider det vevde utgangspunktet. Aalberg benytter materialer som lin, bomull, silke, hamp, polyester, polyproylen og refleks. Noe av garnet er håndfarget for å oppnå ønsket valør. Vevteknikkene er dobbeltvev på enkel renning og toskaft.
